I bought this new in 1992

In 1992 I bought this 454SS. M- In 1999 I sold it to my son and he drove it for another few years and then parked it in his yard where it has sat for 5 or 6 years.

I am getting it back from him and will do a resto mod. M- I am on here looking for ideas.

It has the original block and it ran when he parked it, but I think I am going with a crate motor. M- Does matching numbers block do very much for the value?

I am going to back half the frame, likely with a minor tub. M- Looking for ideas on which supplier offers kits.

The original transmission packed it in after 3 years and was replaced. M- I will get it inspected after I have stripped it down to see if it is worth rebuilding.

I just finished a resto-mod of a 66 Chevelle. M- It took me 10 years to do, but I am retired now so maybe I can finish it in 8 years Smiley .

This will be a driver when finished and maybe the odd Saturday night drags at Firebird (I think they changed the name of the track this year).

I am looking forward to the project and I am open to ideas.

Nice rides. Cool

92's are fairly rare and I wouldn't tub it if I were you, but its your truck Smiley

If I remember correctly GM held production that year to 9999 so they would not be counted as part of their MPG calculations.

I bought it while I was in Canada so it has the gauges in metric.

I am going to sit down with my son this weekend and put a plan together.

The truck always had trouble hooking up, so that is why I was thinking about a tub.

Welcome to the site ,

There were 1,379 SS's produced in 1992 , so as VA said they are fairly rare . Being it was a Canada truck , that number diminishes quite a bit. I wouldn't cut it up , you can fit a fairly wide tire under the rear of these trucks with just a couple of creative mod's to the spring hangers. No need to get crazy .

There is no "numbers matching" with these trucks , install what you want and have fun with it .

God luck with the build .

Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it.

I see one build described on here gfast (the guy lives in Mesa AZ.) used a S&W Race Car back half.  It does not look tubbed,  Not sure why he swapped out the stock frame.

I don't think gfast has installed his kit.  At least he hasn't updated pics if he has.

Mine is a SW kit, kinda.  Mine still uses the stock rear end, just modified.  My truck is far from stock, but it's what I want.  Several guys on here make lots of power and still hook up pretty well with stock-ish rear suspension.

I would pay more for a modified truck, if it was what I wanted, than I would for a stock truck.  Have fun with it!!  Welcome to the site.

I just exchanged emails with him, and he has not installed his kit yet.

He is considering drag racing the truck and that is why he bought the kit.

Given some of the comments I have so far, I will reconsider tubbing.

Once I get the box off I will have a good look at the frame.  It was rearended years ago and I will see if the frame is in good shape.

I want a good streetable car.  My Chevelle is a nice ride, but it is not very street friendly.  The engine does not like RPMs under 2000 and when idling at a stop light she is not happy.

The rear end is ladder bars and the ride is pumppy.  So I hope to elarn from advice I get here plus what I learned during the Chevelle rebuild.

Thanks Tom.  I would really like to see your truck.  Right now we are looking for ideas and being able to see your work first hand  would be great.

I will be at the car show in Old Town Chandler in February with my Chevelle.  They have a good turn out.  Let me know if you are going.

Spent all day reorganizing the garages.  Got a spot all picked out and the dollies are ready.  My project comes home on Tuesday (4th).

It came home on a tow truck a couple of days ago.  The tear down is just starting.  I had a close look at the sheet metal.  It is in good shape.  The box is ready to be lifted off and the front end is removed back to the grille

Looks like it may need some camber adjustment in the front. Lips Sealed

Do not forget the fuel filler and ground connection as well as the rear electricals/ground when taking the bed off.
